　トリニダードジャマイカの旅、ジャマイカ編です。
 
　Now, I will start the Jamaica part.

　2/4,　早朝トリニダードを発ち、５時間のフライトでジャマイカへ。

　2/4, we left Trinidad early morning and flew to Jamaica by Caribbean airline. It took 5 hours.

　ジャマイカ上空です。
　Above Jamaica.

 

　ジャマイカの経済を支えているのはこの港。ハブ港として世界中の船がここに立ち寄るのだそうです。

　Main industry in Jamaica is actually port. It work as Hub port　and ships from all over the world come and use this port.

　ジャマイカを訪ねることにした理由はこのハチドリ。フキナガシハチドリと言って５cm弱の体に２０cmくらいの長い尾を持っています。実はこの子はジャマイカの国鳥で、小さい小さいハチドリの中では体長は最大です。もっともほとんど尾の長さなので体重は５gくらい。雀の体重が約２５gですからその重さの５分の一くらいです。

　The reason we decide to come to Jamaica is to see this humming bird. It's called Red-billed Streamertail and is the national bird in Jamaica. The b body length is about 5cm but the tail is about more tan 20 cm. Actually the longest hummingbird in the world, though it weighs only 5 g and 1/5 of sparrow which weighs about 25 g.

　顔も実に愛らしいです。頭の後ろの毛が長くてなんだかアトム見たい。
　It has lovely face and looks wearing a hat.

 
 
　これがジャマイカですが、私たちが訪ねたのは２箇所だけ。シルバーヒルコテージとゴブリンヒルです。
　This is the map of Jamaica. We visited only two places, Silver Hill Cottage and Goblin Hill.

　空港では通関にものすごく時間がかかって、ガイドのリカルドが諦めて帰ってしまったのではと心配しましたがちゃんと待っていてくれました。早速リカルドの車でまずスーパーマーケットに。ここで買い出しをしてシルバーヒルに向かいます。ここでこれから一週間過ごすのです。

　It took enormous time to go through the custom so I was very much worried if Ricardo, our guid, might have gone back, but he was there. He had patiently weighted for us. Thanks Ricardo. We first went to a supermarket then head for the Silver Hill Cottage, where we are going to stay for a week.

　シルバーヒルコテージは標高１２００mの山あいにあり、広大な敷地には様々な果樹やコーヒーが植えられ、コテージの周りでは四季折々の花々が咲き乱れる実に閑静なところです。写真中央の赤っぽい建物が私たちの泊まるコテージです。

 
　Silver Hill Cottage located 1200m above the sea level in the middle of Blue Mountain. It has huge land and they grow coffee and many kind of fruits, such as orange banana, pear peach.etc. Also a lot of flowers in the garden. Betsy, who helps to manage the cottage and the farm, told me that the garden will be a paradise with hundreds and hundreds of flowers in Spring. Unfortunately February was a bit too early for spring, she said.

　こんな階段を上がると左手にコテージの入り口が。中に入ってびっくり。
　We went up the nice atmospheric stairs. The entrance to the cottage was on the left. We were very surprised entering the cottage!!

　かなり古い建物のようですがよく手入れされていて家具調度も何時代のものかと思うほど立派。

　How gorgeous! How beautiful. We have no idea the all furniture would've been from which era. It was fine and really well-kept.

　これがダイニングテーブル。奥が寝室、左がキッチンです。
　Dining table. The furthest part is our bed room and the left is to the kitchen.

 　ここがキッチン。みどりの着ているものを見て驚くでしょう。何しろここは南国ジャマイカです。実は着いた日は小雨まじりで、下界はそうでもなかったのですが、ここに着いた時は震えるほど寒く、日本を発つ時に着て来た冬服を全部着ました。

　実はジャマイカは、面積は秋田県とほぼ同じですが、中央部には標高2256mを最高峰とするブルー・マウンテン山脈が連なり、海からの湿った風がこの山々にあたって上昇するので中央部は常に霧に覆われているそうです。そして適度な標高とこの霧が良質のコーヒー豆を育みかの有名なブルー・マウンテンコーヒーを生み出しているのだそうです。
　This is kitchen. You will be surprised seeing what I wear. This is Jamaica, a tropical island in the Caribbean sea.　When we arrived here it was freezing cold so we wore all clothes which we had when we left Japan. Jamaica is 11.424 ㎢、not wide but has high mountain range called Blue Mountain, the highest point is 2256m. The moist wind from the sea goes up the mountain range so these areas is always surrounded by cloud and fog. And this fog and proper elevation is very good to grow high quarity coffee, called Blue Mountain.


　ここは寝室。バスタブもあり、ふんだんにとは言えませんでしたけど熱いお湯もちゃんと出ました。

　寝室側から入り口の方を振り返ったところです。正面に、このコテージ唯一の暖房の暖炉があります。右手が入り口です。Look back the dining room from the   bedroom side. In the center there is a fire place, which is the only heating device here.

　ベランダに出ると山深いのがわかります。右側は新しく立てている部屋。今はコテージの管理人が住んでいます。

　If you go out to the veranda you can see how deep this cottage is surrounded by beautiful nature.

　一番下のテラスからコテージを見上げるとこんな感じです。ベランダにいるのはみどりです。

　If you look up the cottage from the lowest terrace in the garden you can see the whole building of the cottage. Midori is on the veranda.

　ベランダからは一番上のテラスに行けます。

　From the veranda we can go to the highest terrace.

　この椅子から正面に見えるのがこの景色。この赤い花はChinese hatと呼ばれ、お目当のフキナガシハチドリは一日中この花に来ます。

From this bench we can see this scenery. The red flower is called Chinese Hat and the Red-billed Streamer tails come to these flowers very often to get nectar.

　花の大きさは一円玉ぐらいでしょうか。
　The size of the flower is about2 cm.


　朝も昼も夕方もこの辺りでフキナガシハチドリを待ちました。フキナガシハチドリです。

この日は午前中はずっと雨でした。
　Almost everyday, we stayed around here and took the photos of them. The first two days, it rained and was cold.

　実に優雅に舞います。
　They fly elegantly.

　ハチドリは結構雨が好き。
　Hummingbirds likes rain.

 
 

　左はメス。右はオスの幼鳥。まだ長い尾がありません。そしてこの花はAngel Tear天使の涙というのだそうです。

　The left is female. the right is young mail, doesn't have long tail yet. The flower is called Angel tear.

　鳴き声はどちらかというとキ～ッキッキッキッキッ、という感じでしょうか。
　They make characteristic noise.


　得意のポーズ。他のハチドリを威嚇しているのだとか、ただ伸びをしているのだとか。

　They like this pose. Maybe insisting their territory or just stretching.

　雨にもめげず。
　Doesn't care about rain.

　よく飛びます。
　Jump!

　そして好きな花の蜜を吸いに行きます。
　And go to get nectar.


　またまた飛びます。左下は庭にあった水道の蛇口の取っ手です。なんとこれもハチドリ。

　The left bottom is the handle of the water supply, surprisingly it has hummingbird shape!

　そしてまた花へ。
　Then again to other flowers.

　さてこの素晴らしい庭付きのコテージですがなんと全て丸ごと全て貸切で一泊７０ドルでした。
　To rent this wonderful whole cottage, cost only 70 USD a day. Amazing isn't it?

　トリニダードとジャマイカの旅、ジャマイカ編その２です。
　This is Jamaica part-2. 
 
シルバーヒルについて4日目、ガイドのリカルドに頼んで鳥見に行きました。彼はキングストンの町外れに住んでいるのでここまで上がって来るのに１時間半ぐらいかかります。朝７時前にもうついていましたからきっと５時には家を出たのでしょう。
　　まずコテージ内を散策。最初に探してもらったのはこの子。小さくて可愛いジャマイカコビトドリ。大きさは約９cm.私たちだけではなかなか見つからないのですがリカルドに頼むと、ものの１０分としないうちに探し当ててくれました。
 
　On the 4th day, we asked Ricardo to take us bird-watching. He lives outskirt of Kingston, so it take about an hour and a half. Since he had arrived before seven o'clock, he must've left his home at 5:00 a.m. 
First we did birdwatching in the yard of the cottage. We asked him to find Jamaican Toddy, which is endemic in Jamaica, very little cute bird. It wasn't easy for us to find but he found it within 10 minutes!

 　小さくて動きが早いのでなかなか追いかけるのが難しいのですが、リカルドが「この枝に呼ぶからね。」というと本当にそこに来るのです。おかげで色々写真が撮れました。
　It moves, jumps and flies so quickly so it wasn't easy to take photos but when Ricardo says " I will make it come on this branch now." then it really come.

　さて、ジャマイカコビトドリを見ているとこの子が来ました。Chestnut-bellid Cukoo ハイムネリスカッコウ。素晴らしく立派な尾を持つ体長４８cmという大きな鳥です。体が大きいので中々全身が見えません。
　Whole watching Jamaican Toddy, Chestnut-bellid Cukoo came. Its a very big bird with long tail so always a part of its body is behind a leaf or branch.

　この子はハゴロモムシクイ。尾羽を広げてくれるとオレンジ色がとても綺麗なのですが中々写真には撮らせてくれません。
　American Redstart It has very beautiful tail but not easy to take the photos with its tail opened.

　アカオヒタキモドキ。 Stolid Flycatcher

　ノドグロルリアメリカムシクイ、オスです。コテージの入り口にあるランプの上がお気に入りの場所です。
　Black-throated Blue Warbler. It likes the lampshade at the entrance of the cottage.

　こちらは彼のパートナー。ノドグロルリアメリカムシクイ、メスです。

　この子はたくさん見ます。マミジロミツドリ。Bananaquit

　クロアカウソ。　Greater Antillean Bullfinch.

 　一通りコテージの庭を見てから林道の散策に。実は山の上は晴れていたのですがちょっと標高の低いところは雨と霧で視界はほどんどなし。その霧の中をリカルドは抜けてきたので、まずコテージで散策しました。もうそろそろいいかと少し下りましたが確かに深い霧。でも少しずつ雲が上がってきました。
　After the birdwatching in the garden of the cottage, we headed for other places a bit lower. Though it was fine around the cottage, it had been cloudy and foggy when Ricardo came up to the cottage. So he made a plan to do birdwatching first here in the cottage, then go lower area where probably it would be better weather later. Actually as we went down, we gradually entered the white screen. We waited for a while till the rain stop and the fog become thinner.

　Jamaican Spindalis　日本名が見つかりませんでした。オスです。Male

　こちらはメス。 Female

　オス。どうやらこの花を食べているようです。

　カンムリウズラバト。ジャマイカの固有種で、とても見るのが難しいそうです。Crested Quail-dove. Endemic in Jamaica

　ジャマイカクロムクドリモドキ これもジャマイカの固有種。
　Jamaican Blackbird Endemic in Jamaica.

　ヤジリアメリカムシクイ　英語名はArrowheaded Warbler。実はリカルドの旅行社 の名前,Arrohead Birdingはここから取ったのだそうです小さくて可愛い鳥ですが、じっとしてなくてすぐどこかに隠れてしまうのでほとんど写真は撮れませんでした。
　Arrowheaded Warbler.Ricardo's company name is Arrowhead birding. He named it after this bird. It is little, cute and always moving so it was difficult to tale photos.

　ジャマイカモリタイランチョウ。Jamaican peewee.固有種です。
　Endemic in Jamaica.

　ジャマイカモズモドキこちらも固有種。Jamaican Vireo Endemic.

　カオグロアメリカムシクイ。鮮やかな黄色と黒い顔がとても気に入ったのですが、これもしい作て動きの早い鳥で、やっと何ショットかとりました。
　Common Yellowthroat.I like this bird. 

　このページのおしまいは裏の畑で見たスズメバト。カップルで地面の中の虫をたべながら結構素早く歩いて行ってしまいました。
　Common Ground Dove. We saw them on the vegetable field in the backyard. The couple walked away quickly picking worms in the ground. 

　つくづく思ったのは、私たちだけでは同じところにいてもほとんど何も見つけられなかっただろうということです。やっぱりリカルドはすごい。この鳥が見たいというとある場所に連れて行ってくれてしかもちゃんとそこにいるのです。私たちは写真を撮りたかったので、なるべく明るそうで、近くで見られるところを選んでくれました。
　While birdwatching we thought that Ricardo is great. We wouldn't be able to find almost any of the birds without him.
We said we want to see this bird. He took us a certain place and the bird is there. It was really amazing. More over he chose places where not very dark and not so far away to the birds for the photos. Thank you very much Ricardo.

　トリニダードとジャマイカの旅、ジャマイカ編その３。This is Jamaica part-3 
 
　さて、ジャマイカで見た鳥は まだまだありますが、このあたりでまたシルバーヒルコッテージでの日々をちょっと紹介しましょう。
　We have seen a lot more birds, let's have a break and let me show our days in this beautiful Silver Hill Cottage a bit more.
博物館並みの家具調度の揃ったダイニングルームで朝ごはんです。We have breakfast in the dining room almost equal to a museum.

 　同じ部屋でティータイム。左奥がキッチンです。電子レンジが見えますけど、残念ながらこれは故障していましたが、古い家なのにそれ以外はオール電化でした。でもオール電化ということは、停電すれば風呂に入れないのもはもちろんお湯もわかせないのです。着いて三日目の夜に停電しました。
　We have tea in the same room. The back left is kitchen. Though this is a historical house it's all electric. It means if the power is out we can't make even a cup of tea. It happened on the third day, but never mind, it's an experience.

 　昼間は鳥見三昧夕方になると冷。えてくるので管理人のデボンが暖炉に火を入れに来てくれます。
　During the day we enjoy bird watching. In the evening it get cold so Devon, the caretaker of the cottage come and make fire on the fireplace. 

 　夜はそれなりに冷えますがこれが唯一の暖房です。赤々と燃える火がとても心強いです。
　It's a bit cold during the night. This is the only we to get worm and the fire burning brightly makes us happy.

 　このソファーに座って日本から持って来た中島みゆきを聴きます。
　Sitting on this sofa we listen to the song of Miyuki Nakajima we brought from Japan. 

 　さてでは鳥見の続きです。別荘に行く道は狭くて急斜面にあるのでかなり気をつけて運転しないと崖下に落ちそうですがなんと現場に出会ってしまいました。かろうじて落下を免れたようですが自力では脱出不可ののようでした。ガイドのリカルドが車を止めて写真を撮っていたのでちょっと気が咎めましたが私たちも一枚。
　Now let me show you some photos of birds again. The road to go to the cottage is on a steep slope and is very narrow and dangerous. We happened to see the scene. The car was about to slip off from the side of the road. Feeling sorry for the driver,

この頭の黄色の羽は普段は見えなくて、興奮した時などに現れてくるので珍しい写真だそうです。
　We can't see this yellow feather usually. It appears only when it get angry or special case. So we were lucky to see it.

　ジャマイカにはフキナガシハチドリは２種類います。くちばしの赤い方が国鳥。島全体にいるようです。反対にくちばしの黒い方は東部だけ。大きさは黒い方がやや小さめ。どちらも本当に美しいです。くちばしの色の違いを見てください。
　There are two streamer tails in Jamaica. One is red-billed Streamertail. This is the national bird in Jamaica. The other is black-billed streamer tail. As the name shows, it has black beak. The black ones live only in the east part of Jamaica. You can see the difference of the color of their beaks clearly in this photo.

　トリニダードとジャマイカの旅、ジャマイカ編その4。やっと何とか最終編にたどり着きました。
　This is Jamaica part-4. This is really the last part of this travel. 
 
　ジャマイカは、ハチドリファンにとっては国鳥であるフキナガシハチドリで有名ですが、他にも３種類ハチドリがいます。まずこの子。コビトハチドリ。その名の通り体長約５cm。キューバの豆ハチドリについで世界で２番目に小さいハチドリだそうです。

　There are three other hummingbirds in Jamaica. This is one of them. Vervain Hummingbird. The length of the body is about 5 cm. The second smallest humming bird in the world after the Bee Hummingbird in Cube.

　この花、チャイニーズハットと呼ばれているのですが、この花の大きさが大体一円玉と同じです。ですからこの子は大体一円玉２個半ぐらいでしょうか。

　The flower is called Chinese hut. The size of one of this flower is almost one yen Japanese coin. You may not know the size of one yen coin but any way it's very small and cute.

　残りの２種は、この地区では見られないので東海岸地区に移ってから紹介します。

 
 
　ここではもう少しだけ、シルバーヒルコテージ周辺の鳥を紹介します。
　We can't see the remaining two so I will introduce them after moving to the east part of Jamaica. 
 
　この子はアゴジロツグミ　ここではどこでもいます。
This is White-chinned thrush. We can see everywhere here.

　こちらはメジロムジツグミ。目の周りに丸く白い輪があります。

　This is White-eyed thrush. The white ring around it's eye is cute.

　こちらはキマユクビワスズメ。確かにスズメですがなかなか可愛いです。とまっているのはバナナの木の切り株です。

　This is Yellow-faced Grassquit, patching on the stump of banana tree.

　なかなか凛々しいです。
　He is handsome, isn't he? Maybe calling to his future partner???


　この日でコテージとはお別れ。次は東海岸のゴブリンヒルに、残りのハチドリを見に行きます。これは私達が泊まっていたコテージのドアのドアノッカーです。

　I don't know how it's called but it was in the front door of the cottage. 

　２月１１日。この日はリカルドが朝早く来てくれて、３時間ぐらいコテージで鳥見をして、それからゴブリンヒルに出発しました。

　On the 11th of February, Ricardo came earlier and we did more birdwatching, then leave for Goblin Hill. 

　左がリカルド、みどり、そして農園と別荘の管理をしているベッツィです。実はあのウサインボルトのおばさんだそうです。なのでボルトはたまにこのコテージにも来るそうです。彼女は日本好きで、柔道だか空手だかをやっているそうです。いかにもスポーツ得意そうです。

　The left, Ricardo, Midori, then Betty, who take care of the farm and cottage. Actually she is the aunt of Usain Bolt, the famous athlete. 

　最後に、毎日ストーブに火を入れてくれたデボンとツーショット。


　シルバーヒルから東海岸のゴブリンヒルまでは約3時間。山を降りて海岸線にでます。右から２番目が私達の部屋。このホテルの庭なら、クチバシの黒いフキナガシハチドリが必ず見られるとういうので決めました。

　It took about 3 hours from Silver Hill to Goblin Hill, located along the beach。We decided to stay here because it will be easy to see Black-billed Streamertail.

　部屋に入るとこんな感じです。


　庭からの眺めは、確かにジャマイカは熱帯だということを実感しました。

　The scenery from the garden, made us feel that we were really in a tropical island.

　そして、これが見たかったクチバシの黒い フキナガシハチドリ。 残念ながら暗いのであまり綺麗な写真は撮れませんでした。

　This is Black-billed Streamertail, which we wanted to see. It was dark so it was very difficult to take good photos.

　確かに嘴は黒かったです。They had black-billed.

　さて、着いた翌日は、シラオネッタイチョウ、white-tailed tropicbird を見に行きました。ホテルから１時間ほど車で行ったところに、シラオネッタイチョウが巣を作っている崖があり、早朝一斉に鳥たちが巣を出入りするところが見られるということで行くことにしました。

　The next day, we decided to go to see white-tailed tropicbird. Ricardo told us that there is a very good spot to see them. They make nests on a cliff and we can see a lot of them leaving from their nests or coming back to their nests in the very early morning.

　これがシラオネッタイチョウです。
　This is white-tailed tropicbird.


　実はこの日は、この鳥が朝のいっときしか見られないことを知らなくて、朝出遅れ、目的地に着いた頃にはすでに夜が明けていて、もうあまり目的の鳥は見られませんでした。そこで翌日再挑戦。今度は朝まだ暗いうちにホテルを出、シラオネッタイチョウの集まる崖が見えるところで夜明けを待ちました。夜明けです。

　This day we were late and the had risen when we arrived there. So we tried again the next day. We left the hotel in the dark, went to the cape before dawn and waited for them to come.

　崖の洞窟の右上の小さな穴に親鳥が卵を温めているのが見えました。

　There is a nest above the cave on the cliff and we can see the bird probably warming eggs.

　しばらくすると荒波の上に見えてきました。この日はお天気も良く明るかったので２人で多分１００００回はシャッターを切ったのではないでしょうか。２つ入れていたメモリーを全部使いきりました。

　After a while, we could see hundreds and hundreds of white-tailed tropicbird flying above the rough sea. The weather was fine. We took probably more than 10000 photos.

　ジャマイカ、キングストンの空港は長い半島の先端にあります。空港は写真の右下。正面の雲に隠れているあたりが、私たちが泊まっていたシルバーヒルのあるブルー・マウンテンです。

　Kingston airport is located at the Endo of a long peninsula. So the airport is left bottom. The mountain range covered with the cloud in the middle of the photo is Blue Mountain where there are Silver Hill Cottage we stayed.

　そしてトロントから東京へ。　From Toronto to Tokyo.


　スカイツリーも見えました。We saw Tokyo Skytree.
